The saves of an Alchemy Factory server are stored in the folder AlchemyFactory/Saved/SaveGames. To bring your own world to the server, place the save file there via file manager or SFTP and restart the server. Important: the server does not save when it stops. So keep autosave on and only stop the server once all players have left.

Where are the saves on the server?

Save gamesAlchemyFactory/Saved/SaveGames
Server settingsServerConfig.ini in the root directory

You can reach both in the panel through the file manager or via SFTP.

How do I upload my own world to the server?

  1. All players leave the server. With the default setting “Pause when empty” it saves automatically as soon as the last player leaves.
  2. Stop the server in the panel.
  3. Back up the current server save: Download the contents of AlchemyFactory/Saved/SaveGames or create a backup in the panel.
  4. Upload your save file: Open AlchemyFactory/Saved/SaveGames in the file manager and upload your world’s file. Large files are easier to upload via SFTP.
  5. Start the server and connect. Check that your factory has loaded.

Tip

If there would be several saves in the folder after uploading, move the old ones into a subfolder of their own or download them first. That way it's clear which world the server loads, and you still have the old state.

Why is my progress gone after a restart?

Because the Alchemy Factory server does not save when it shuts down. Everything that happened since the last autosave is lost when you stop or restart it. That includes restarts you need for changed settings.

This is how you protect your progress:

  • Keep autosave mode 1. The server then saves every 5 minutes. That’s the default.
  • Keep “Pause when empty” on. When the last player leaves, the server saves automatically and pauses the simulation.
  • Wait until everyone has left before stopping. Then the automatic save on leaving kicks in.

You find both settings in the panel under Server → Settings → Startup variables.

autosave_modeBehaviorRecommendation
0saves when players sleeponly if you sleep regularly
1every 5 minutesdefault, recommended
2every 10 minutespossible, you may lose more in the worst case
3nevernot recommended

Warning

With autosave_mode = 3 the server never saves automatically. Combined with the missing save on stop, you can lose the entire progress of a session.

How do I back up my save properly?

  • Create a backup before every update. According to the developer the dedicated server is experimental, so updates can bring surprises. After a game update your server fetches the new version automatically on its next start.
  • Create backups in the panel or download the folder AlchemyFactory/Saved/SaveGames via file manager or SFTP.
  • Only back up when the server is empty. Once all players have left, the latest state is saved and the backup is complete.
