How much RAM does a 7 Days to Die server need?

Short answer: for a vanilla server, the community treats 16 GB as a solid baseline, while small groups of up to 8 players often get by with 8–12 GB. With overhaul mods the recommendations rise to 16–24 GB, and large servers go to 32 GB. Important: these are community guidelines, not official system requirements — actual usage depends primarily on map size.

What drives RAM usage?

7 Days to Die keeps the world in memory while running — which makes world size the biggest lever, ahead of player count:

FactorEffect on RAM
Map sizeBiggest driver: an 8192 RWG world needs far more than a 4096 one; 6144 (default) is the middle ground
Player countMore players = more loaded chunks and entities at once
ModsOverhaul mods raise usage noticeably (16–24 GB community guideline)
PlaytimeGrowing bases and explored areas make the save and memory footprint grow with them

Beyond RAM, the disk matters: NVMe SSDs are recommended for smooth chunk loading — standard at RespawnHost.

32 GB€60Large community servers, overhaul mods, 10240 worlds

All packages are available as a fixed package or billed by the second via pay-per-use.

Tip

Start small and upgrade when needed: at RespawnHost you can switch packages in the panel at any time. Watch your server's RAM usage after the first blood moons — that tells you whether your package has headroom.

Note

Crossplay servers are capped at 8 players and run without mods — 8–12 GB is usually enough there, as long as you don't pick an oversized world. Details in the crossplay guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is 8 GB enough for a 7 Days to Die server? For small groups (up to ~8 players) on a compact world: by community experience, yes — 8–12 GB is common there. For default-size or larger worlds, or with mods, go higher.

How much do mods increase RAM usage? Considerably: for modded servers the community cites 16–24 GB as the guideline, with large overhaul setups heading towards 32 GB.

Does a bigger map really use more RAM than more players? Yes — map size is considered the biggest single factor. An 8192 world weighs in far heavier than a few extra players on a 4096 world. On choosing world size: Maps, saves & wipes.
