Server lagging: find and fix performance problems
Your game server is lagging or stuttering? The difference between server lag and ping, spotting RAM bottlenecks, and stopping the most common performance hogs.

“Lag” has two completely different causes: server lag (the server can’t keep up with the simulation — affects all players at once) and network lag/ping (a single player’s connection is slow). Step one is always figuring out which of the two you’re dealing with.
Server lag or ping problem?
| Symptom | Likely cause |
|---|---|
| All players stutter at the same time, actions delay server-wide | Server lag (simulation overloaded) |
| Only individual players lag, rubberbanding for one person | That player’s ping/network |
| Lag spikes at specific events (world save, blood moon, raid) | Server lag, usually normal/short |
| Consistently high ping for everyone from one region | Location choice (distance to server) |
For Minecraft, the console additionally shows TPS values (20 = perfect) — other games log similar tick/frame times.
The most common server lag causes
Not enough RAM
When memory runs low, performance collapses before the server crashes. Typical after mod installations or with a grown world/player count. Solution: pick a bigger RAM plan in the panel — guideline values are in your game’s RAM guide.
Too many/heavy mods and plugins
A single poorly optimized mod can slow a server to a crawl. Use the binary search approach from Mods not loading to find which extension causes the load.
Game mechanic hotspots
Huge farms, thousands of entities/items on the ground, extremely large exploration radii — every game has its known performance hogs. The game-specific performance guides (e.g. Minecraft performance) list them with countermeasures.
Note
You don't book CPU or storage separately at RespawnHost — every server gets fair-use vCores and NVMe storage. The lever you choose yourself is the RAM plan.
Improving ping
- Pick the right location: Frankfurt for EU groups, Salt Lake City for US groups. For mixed groups, choose the majority’s location.
- A single player with high ping: local problem (Wi-Fi → LAN, router restart, stop other downloads).
Frequently asked questions
How do I know the RAM isn’t enough? Performance collapsing shortly after start or with many players, frequent world-save freezes, and in the extreme case OutOfMemory entries in the log. Then switch to the next RAM tier in the panel.
Does a server restart help against lag? Short-term, often yes — many games accumulate entities and memory leftovers over long uptimes. Regular restarts (e.g. daily via schedules) are best practice for most games.
Why does it only lag in the evening? Evenings have the highest player counts — more players mean more simulation. If it stutters daily at peak time, that’s a clear signal for the next RAM tier or less load (mods, farms, view distances).
Is lag caused by your hardware? All servers run on current hardware with NVMe storage. If you keep seeing problems despite a suitable RAM plan and a tidy server, open a support ticket — we’ll look at the utilization.
