How much RAM does a Terraria server need?

The official figure is refreshingly modest: around 500 MB of RAM for a small world. That makes Terraria one of the most frugal server games out there. You mainly need more RAM for large worlds, many concurrent players and tModLoader with mod packs.

RAM recommendations at a glance

Beyond the official figure for small worlds: the following values for bigger setups are real-world hosting experience, not official numbers from Re-Logic.

Small world, few players~500 MBOfficial figure
Medium/large world, vanilla1–2 GBExperience value
tModLoader with mod packs2–4 GBExperience value

Note

Actual usage depends on world size, player count and (with tModLoader) heavily on the installed mods. Large content mods can push RAM usage well beyond the table above.

Which RespawnHost package fits?

Terraria servers at RespawnHost start at €4/month with 2 GB RAM — comfortable for vanilla worlds of any size, with headroom for plenty of players.

SetupRecommendation
Vanilla, small to large worldEntry package (2 GB)
tModLoader with many/large modsBigger package (4 GB and up)

Both billing models are available: fixed package (flat monthly price) or Pay-Per-Use (per second, only while the server runs). You can switch packages anytime if your mod pack grows.

Tip

Starting small pays off: begin with the entry package and watch the live RAM usage in the panel. Upgrading is faster than overpaying.

Frequently asked questions

Is 2 GB of RAM enough for a Terraria server? For vanilla: yes, comfortably — the official requirement is ~500 MB for small worlds, and even large vanilla worlds typically stay under 2 GB in practice.

How much RAM does a tModLoader server need? As a rule of thumb from experience: 2–4 GB depending on the mod pack. Large content mods (and many mods at once) can need more — the live display in the panel shows the real usage.

Does player count affect RAM usage? Yes, but moderately — world size and mods weigh more. The default of 16 slots (maxplayers, see the configuration guide) is easily handled by the entry package.
