Palworld vs ARK — the head-to-head comparison
The short answer: Palworld is the more complete package in 2026 — cheaper, officially finished since July 10, 2026 (1.0) and with a much larger player base. ARK Survival Ascended (ASA) wins on its more mature, cross-platform mod ecosystem, but is still stuck in early access. Here’s the full comparison for your server decision.
Overview
| Aspect | Palworld | ARK Survival Ascended |
|---|---|---|
| Price | $29.99 | $44.99 |
| Status | 1.0 since July 10, 2026 | Early access (since Oct 25, 2023, no 1.0 date) |
| All-time peak (Steam) | 2,101,867 | 98,047 |
| Players July 2026 | 1.0 launch: 722K–855K | ~49,600 |
| Server RAM | ~16 GB (official) | 16 GB per map, more for clusters |
| Mods | Steam Workshop (new, experimental, Windows-only) + Nexus | CurseForge, cross-platform, 250+ incl. premium mods |
| Crossplay | full (via CrossplayPlatforms setting) | full |
What does each game cost?
Palworld costs $29.99 — Pocketpair deliberately skipped the price increase that usually comes with a 1.0 release. ASA sits at $44.99 despite still being early access. For a group of 8 people, that difference quickly adds up to over 100 dollars.
What’s the state of development?
- Palworld hit its 1.0 release on July 10, 2026 — the game officially counts as finished.
- ASA has been in early access since October 25, 2023, with no 1.0 date announced.
For a server, that means: with Palworld you build on a finished release; with ASA you keep living with early-access uncertainty.
How many people play Palworld and ARK in 2026?
- Palworld: all-time peak of 2,101,867 concurrent players (January 27, 2024 — #3 in Steam history). The 1.0 launch in July 2026 delivered huge numbers again: 722,000 on day one up to around 855,000 over the launch weekend.
- ASA: all-time peak 98,047, around 49,600 players in July 2026.
Palworld plays in a different league here — which mainly means: more potential players and a livelier community for your server.
How much RAM do the servers need?
| Palworld | ASA | |
|---|---|---|
| RAM requirement | ~16 GB (official recommendation) | 16 GB per map |
| Caveat | memory leak → daily restart is common practice | clusters (multiple maps) need correspondingly more |
Palworld has a known memory leak — a daily automatic restart is standard practice on Palworld servers and keeps memory usage in check. For ASA: 16 GB per map; run a multi-map cluster and the requirement multiplies. Palworld details in the RAM guide.
Who has the better mods?
ASA wins this one clearly: modding runs via CurseForge, works cross-platform (even console players use mods!) and covers over 250 mods including curated premium mods. Palworld’s Steam Workshop support only launched with 1.0 and is still experimental and Windows-only; the Nexus scene exists alongside it. What currently works is covered in The best Palworld mods 2026.
What about crossplay?
Both games offer full crossplay. In Palworld you control the allowed platforms server-side via the CrossplayPlatforms setting — see the crossplay guide.
Which one is for you?
Palworld suits you if …
- you want a finished game (1.0) instead of early access
- the lower price ($29.99) matters for your group
- you want to benefit from the huge, active player base
- automation and the Pal-catching loop appeal to you more than pure dino taming
ASA suits you if …
- mods are meant to be the heart of your server (CurseForge, cross-platform, premium mods)
- you want the classic ARK experience with dinos and tribes
- the early-access status and higher price don’t bother you
Note
We don't offer ARK Survival Ascended as a game server — you self-host it on a Windows VPS; the full walkthrough is in the ASA guide.
Frequently asked questions
Is Palworld or ARK more popular in 2026? Palworld, by a wide margin: an all-time peak of 2,101,867 players and 722,000–855,000 at the 1.0 launch in July 2026 — versus around 49,600 ASA players in the same month.
How much RAM does a Palworld or ASA server need? Both around 16 GB — Palworld as the official recommendation (plus a daily restart because of the memory leak), ASA per map; a multi-map cluster needs correspondingly more.
Did Palworld get a price increase after 1.0? No. Pocketpair deliberately didn’t implement the price increase planned for 1.0 — Palworld still costs $29.99.
Which game has the better mod selection? ASA: over 250 mods on CurseForge, cross-platform including premium mods. Palworld’s official Workshop support is new, experimental and Windows-only.
