The rule of thumb: ~6 GB base + 0.5 GB per player
A Project Zomboid server needs noticeably more memory since Build 42.20 (stable since 29 July 2026). The reason is architectural: inventory and all TimedActions now run server-side — work the client used to do. The community rule of thumb is still around 6 GB base plus about 0.5 GB per player, but that figure comes from the Build 41 era and sits at the lower edge for B42.
In our own hosting practice, B42 servers did not run reliably on 8 GB — they dropped as soon as several players loaded new map areas at the same time. That is why our smallest Project Zomboid plan is 10 GB. Mods — especially map mods — add to the requirement.
Note
These figures are a community rule of thumb, not an official system requirement. Watch your server's real usage and leave generous headroom when running mods.
How much RAM for how many players?
| Players | RAM (rule of thumb) | Matching RespawnHost package |
|---|---|---|
| 2–8 | approx. 8–10 GB | 10 GB — €18/month (entry) |
| 9–16 | approx. 12–14 GB | 14 GB — €23.80/month |
| 17–36 | approx. 14–20 GB | 20 GB — €32/month |
| Many mods / map mods | significantly more | 24 GB — €36/month |
Warning
For Build 42 multiplayer, The Indie Stone currently recommends fewer than 20 players anyway — details in the Build 42 server guide.
Which RespawnHost packages are available?
Project Zomboid servers at RespawnHost start from €8/month — as a fixed package or billed per second with pay-per-use:
| Plan | Price/month | Recommended for |
|---|---|---|
| 10 GB | €18 | 16 players |
| 14 GB | €23.80 | 24 players |
| 20 GB | €32 | 36 players |
| 24 GB | €36 | 44 players |
We no longer offer smaller plans for Project Zomboid — they did not run reliably under Build 42. All plans: Rent a Project Zomboid Server
What drives RAM usage up?
- Server-side inventory (new in Build 42) — item transfers, containers and loot distribution are computed by the server since 42.20, not the client
- Mods — especially map mods increase the requirement significantly
- Player count — roughly +0.5 GB per additional player (rule of thumb)
- Self-hosting: Project Zomboid runs on Java — you allocate RAM to the server via the
-Xmxstart parameter
Frequently asked questions
Is 8 GB of RAM enough for a Project Zomboid server? Not reliably under Build 42. In our hosting practice, 8 GB servers dropped as soon as several players loaded new map areas at once — which is why we start at 10 GB.
How much RAM do I need for 10 players? By the rule of thumb, around 11 GB (6 + 10 × 0.5) — the 14 GB package gives you headroom for mods.
Is the rule of thumb official? No — it comes from the community (several consistent sources). Keep an eye on your server’s actual usage.
Do mods increase RAM usage? Yes, significantly — map mods above all. With a modded server, plan one or two package tiers larger.
