Which Rust plugins are worth it in 2026?

The short answer: Vanish, Rust Kits, NTeleportation and Gather Manager are the free starter kit of almost every community server, Raidable Bases is the most popular PvE feature plugin, and ZombieHorde the best-known paid one. Rust plugins run entirely server-side — your players don’t install anything. Here’s the best-of list with author, price and source, plus the loader question: Oxide or Carbon?

All free plugins come from uMod, the official home of the Oxide ecosystem. For Raidable Bases, the base plugin is free on uMod; the premium version lives on Codefling, and the pre-built base packs cost extra (tier 1: $20, tier 2: $50). ZombieHorde (last updated March 5, 2026) is $10 on chaoscode.io.

Tip

How to enable Oxide and upload the .cs files to oxide/plugins/ is covered step by step in the plugin installation guide — including permissions and hot loading without a restart.

What belongs on every community server?

The proven free combo:

  • Vanish (Whispers88): admins observe invisibly — mandatory for clean moderation.
  • Rust Kits (k1lly0u): starter kits against the naked-on-the-beach frustration after every death.
  • NTeleportation (nivex): homes and player teleports — the de-facto standard on non-vanilla servers.
  • Gather Manager (Mughisi): 2x/5x rates are the most common reason players look for a community server in the first place.
  • NoEscape (Calytic): prevents combat and raid escapes via teleport — keeps PvP fair.
  • Backpacks (WhiteThunder): more storage, less inventory Tetris.
  • SkinBox: players skin items directly on the server.

Which plugins make PvE servers special?

  • Raidable Bases (nivex): spawns AI-defended bases players can raid — the centerpiece of many PvE servers where player raiding is disabled. Base free on uMod, premium expansion via Codefling ($20/$50 for tier 1/2 base packs).
  • ZombieHorde (k1lly0u, $10): roaming zombie hordes as a constant threat — turns Rust into a survival horror experience.

Oxide or Carbon — which loader is better?

Both load the same .cs plugins, and both are free:

Performancesolidconsidered faster in hoster benchmarks

Carbon is a free open-source loader built as a drop-in replacement for Oxide: around 99% of Oxide plugins run unchanged, existing configs are migrated, and the loader keeps itself up to date. Carbon is even listed in the official Facepunch wiki by now. Oxide/uMod remains the established standard with the widest adoption. For new servers, Carbon is worth a look — especially since hoster benchmarks consider it the more performant option; if you run an existing Oxide server, the config migration makes switching relatively painless.

Note

The framework choice is server configuration: at RespawnHost you set oxide or carbon in the startup variables — both fields (framework + root directory) must have the same value.

Frequently asked questions

Do my players have to install plugins? No. Rust plugins run 100% server-side — players join with the completely normal client. That’s the big difference from mods in games like DayZ.

How much do good Rust plugins cost? The core setup is completely free (uMod). Money mainly goes to premium feature plugins: ZombieHorde $10, the Raidable Bases base packs $20 (tier 1) and $50 (tier 2).

Do uMod plugins also run on Carbon? Around 99% do — Carbon is built as a drop-in replacement for Oxide and even migrates existing plugin configs.

Will plugins get my server listed as “Modded”? Yes. As soon as Oxide or Carbon is installed, the server appears in the Modded tab of the server browser — gameplay-altering plugins on the Community tab violate Facepunch’s guidelines.
