Which map should I pick for my server?
You have three options: Navezgane (the hand-crafted story map, ~6.1k), the pre-generated PREGEN01–03 worlds (8k, ready instantly) and random world generation (RWG) with your own seed and a freely chosen size. Quick recommendation: Navezgane for your first playthrough, PREGEN for a fast start on a big world, RWG for maximum variety and replayability.
Navezgane, PREGEN or RWG — the comparison
| Map | Size | Characteristics |
|---|---|---|
| Navezgane | ~6.1k | Hand-crafted official world, ships with the game, no generation needed |
| PREGEN01–03 | 8k | Three pre-generated RWG worlds, bundled — lots of room without any waiting |
| RWG (random world gen) | 4096–10240 (default 6144) | A unique world from WorldGenSeed + WorldGenSize — generation on first start takes time depending on size |
You set the map via the GameWorld property (details in the serverconfig guide); for RWG, WorldGenSeed and WorldGenSize come on top. Keep in mind: bigger worlds need considerably more RAM — guidelines in How much RAM do I need?
Note: new POIs need new chunks
The 60+ new POIs from V3.0 only appear in newly generated chunks and worlds. In an old save they only show up where you've never been — to experience the new content in full, start a fresh world.
Where are the save files?
For RWG worlds, the game state consists of two parts — and they belong together (self-hosting paths on Windows; at RespawnHost you reach the corresponding folders via the file manager in the panel):
| Folder | Contents |
|---|---|
%APPDATA%\7DaysToDie\Saves\<world>\<game name>\ | The actual save: players, bases, progress |
%APPDATA%\7DaysToDie\GeneratedWorlds\<world>\ | The generated RWG world itself (terrain, POIs) |
A complete backup of an RWG world needs both folders — the save alone won’t run without its generated world.
Do I have to wipe for V3.0?
No — the jump from V2.6 to V3.0 required no forced wipe; old saves keep working. Still, a fresh map is recommended: the new POIs, the reworked systems and the new sandbox configuration only unfold fully in a new world. Point releases like V3.0.1 (July 13, 2026) are uncritical — saves are kept.
How do I wipe my server?
- Stop the server. Never delete files while it’s running.
- Create a backup in the panel first — in case you want the old world back after all.
- Delete the world’s Saves folder; for RWG worlds, also delete the matching folder under GeneratedWorlds.
- Optional: set a new
WorldGenSeedor change the game name — either forces a fresh world without touching any files. - Start the server — the new world is generated or loaded.
Tip
The cleanest "wipe without deleting": just enter a new game name or seed. The server creates a fresh save while the old one stays around as a fallback — the only cost is disk space.
Frequently asked questions
Do I keep my save on updates like V3.0.1? Yes — point releases are bugfix updates and saves are kept. Only for major version jumps is it worth checking the release notes.
Why can’t I find the new V3.0 POIs on my old map? New POIs only appear in newly generated chunks. Areas you’ve already explored stay exactly as they were — only a fresh world shows all the new locations.
Is deleting only the Saves folder enough? For Navezgane and PREGEN: yes. For RWG worlds you should also remove the folder under GeneratedWorlds if you want the world itself regenerated — otherwise you restart on the same terrain.
