Valheim 1.0 improves mist clearing in the Mistlands: Wisplight, Wisp torches and Mistwalker gain more range, and all Mistlands weapons gain a mist-removing effect. These changes appear explicitly in the official release notes. It is worth reviewing your equipment before returning to the biome, even if you are not ready for the Deep North.
Which methods clear mist?
| Method | Role on an expedition | Official 1.0 change |
|---|---|---|
| Wisplight | A mobile companion while exploring | Larger mist-clearing area |
| Wisp torch | A fixed reference point on a path or at an outpost | Larger mist-clearing area |
| Mistwalker | A sword with an additional effect on mist | Larger mist-clearing area |
| Other Mistlands weapons | Another option while using your equipment | Gain mist clearing too |
The patch notes do not give exact new radii. Avoid treating older measurements as confirmed 1.0 values. Increased range also does not mean the whole biome becomes permanently clear. You still need to plan around limited visibility and check what your chosen equipment actually does.
Why does the accessory slot matter?
The Wisplight reference documents its use of the accessory slot. Megingjord, the belt that increases carrying capacity, uses that slot as well. You cannot simply receive both effects by equipping both there.
That makes the new effect on Mistlands weapons worth investigating. On a known hauling route, test whether your drawn weapon provides enough visibility while you wear Megingjord. Also check what happens when you switch to a tool, bow or another item. The patch note does not establish that a weapon sitting in your inventory always provides the same visibility.
Our recommendation is to keep the Wisplight with you for unfamiliar terrain until you have compared the options yourself. Leaving it at home just because another item clears mist may be an unnecessary risk. Range and handling can matter more than freeing the accessory slot on a particular journey.
How do you craft a Wisplight?
The community reference lists one Silver and one Wisp at a level-one Workbench. The recipe unlocks after acquiring a Wisp for the first time. Check the current crafting menu, especially in a modded game.
The light accompanies you once equipped. The reference describes it following with some separation, so rapid changes of direction can briefly leave mist in your way. If a quick turn makes the terrain difficult to read, pause and reorient rather than sprinting blindly ahead.
Extra inventory slots help you carry several tools, but they do not change this accessory-slot restriction. Our Haldor pocket-upgrade guide explains the distinction between spare slots and additional carrying capacity.
How should you plan a route with Wisp torches?
Fixed torches are useful to consider along repeated routes: between an outpost and a dungeon, between buildings or at a confusing junction. Begin with the places where your group actually loses its bearings.
We recommend building the route in stages. Place a reference point, walk the section in both directions, then add the next. Judge visibility from a player’s position on the ground. A route that looks clear from a high rock may be much harder to follow between the rocks.
Agree on named meeting points and mark them on the map. Mist clearing does not replace coordination: a player can be on another ridge while seemingly standing very close to the group. When carrying a haul back, a familiar route may be more useful than the shortest straight line.
What should returning Mistlands players check?
Start at a familiar edge of the biome and compare your old equipment with its 1.0 behaviour. Check visibility, weapon swaps and your way back before entering a new dungeon. The patch notes also increase durability for Mistlands and Ashlands equipment. That is another relevant change, but it does not establish unlimited endurance or easier combat.
If you are returning to the Ashlands too, distinguish the spawn changes carefully. Iron Gate reduces the spawn chance of several enemies but also lists a shorter spawn interval for Charred. Those are different measures; the notes do not support saying every enemy now appears less often.
If a favourite weapon has reached its regular upgrade limit, the Forge of Potential offers another route. A failed attempt there can destroy the item. Avoid risking your only reliable weapon immediately before returning to a dangerous biome.
FAQ
Do all Valheim weapons now clear mist?
No. The official change names Mistlands weapons, not every weapon in the game.
What is the exact new Wisplight radius?
The 1.0 notes confirm an increase without giving an exact measurement.
Can I equip Wisplight and Megingjord together?
Both occupy the same accessory slot, making them alternative uses of that slot.
Does this permanently remove mist from the world?
No. These items provide local visibility rather than permanently clearing the entire Mistlands biome.
Returning to the Mistlands together?
Choose a Valheim fixed plan for your shared world. From September 8–29, 2026, the launch promotion provides 30% off the first term, then the regular plan price applies. Pay-per-use is excluded; discounts do not stack.
