Valheim: How Much RAM & Which Package Do I Need?
RAM recommendations for Valheim servers by player count, why usage grows with world size, and which RespawnHost package (5–24 GB) fits your group.

How much RAM does a Valheim server need?
Valheim is far more modest than most survival games. The short answer for vanilla:
| Group size | Recommended RAM |
|---|---|
| 2–5 players | 2–4 GB |
| 5–10 players | 4–8 GB (6–8 GB is the “sweet spot”) |
| Modded (BepInEx, ValheimPlus) | 8 GB+, large modpacks rather 10–16 GB |
The officially stated minimum is 2 GB RAM (with a 4-core CPU). In practice a small group runs on that, but 4 GB gives noticeably more headroom — and bigger or long-played worlds want more.
Why RAM usage grows over time
In Valheim, usage grows mainly with world size, not linearly with player count. Every explored zone (64 × 64 metres) is saved; the more you discover, build and terraform, the larger the world file and the more the server holds in memory. A fresh world with two players might use 3–4 GB — the same world after months of heavy play, considerably more.
Two takeaways:
- Schedule regular restarts — they free up used memory and keep performance stable. You can set up automatic restarts (e.g. overnight) in the panel.
- Pick one tier larger if you plan to play a big world for a long time.
CPU: clock speed beats core count
Valheim’s world simulation runs mostly on a single core — so the CPU’s single-thread performance matters more than raw core count. Below roughly 3 GHz you’ll hit rubber-banding and load stutters sooner while exploring. That’s why RespawnHost servers run on AMD Ryzen 9 with high clock speeds (Frankfurt: Ryzen 9 9950X with DDR5, Salt Lake City: Ryzen 9 7950X). It’s included with every package — nothing to configure.
Which RespawnHost package fits you?
Our Valheim packages differ primarily in RAM (5 to 24 GB). As a rule of thumb:
- 5 GB — perfect for 2–5 friends on a fresh vanilla world.
- 9–12 GB — for 5–10 players or a grown world with lots of exploration and builds.
- 16 GB — comfortable headroom for long-term worlds or first mods.
- 20–24 GB — for large modpacks, raised player limits or multiple worlds. The 24 GB package is our best-value pick.
Current prices are on the Valheim server page. With Pay-Per-Use you only pay while the server runs — so even a large package costs next to nothing for a few hours of play.
Can I upgrade later?
Yes. If your group or world grows, switch to a larger package in the panel — your save stays intact.
FAQ
Is 5 GB enough to start? Plenty for 2–5 players on a fresh world. If you plan a huge long-term world or mods, go one tier higher right away.
My server stutters despite enough RAM — why? Usually from running too long without a restart, or from weaker single-thread performance while exploring new areas. Setting up an automatic restart helps.
Is player count the only factor? No — world size (explored zones, builds) affects RAM more than raw player count.
