Creating a Terraria server at RespawnHost
This guide takes you from ordering to your first join on your own Terraria server. The server is online in under 90 seconds — after that it’s just pick a world, start, connect.
How does a Terraria dedicated server work technically?
Terraria has no separate server app on Steam. The dedicated server ships as TerrariaServer.exe right inside the game folder — alternatively, Re-Logic offers a standalone server zip on terraria.org (currently “Terraria Server 1.4.5.6”). At RespawnHost you don’t need to worry about any of this: the server is installed and kept up to date automatically.
Since 1.4.5 “Bigger and Boulder” (January 27, 2026, simultaneous on all platforms), mobile players can play together with PC players via dedicated servers — console crossplay is still awaiting certification.
Requirements
- A RespawnHost account — register here
- Credit on the account (prepaid system, top up via PayPal or credit card, for example)
- Terraria on Steam (PC) or mobile
Step 1: Order the server
- Open the Terraria order page.
- Pick your billing model: fixed package (flat monthly price, paid upfront from credit) or Pay-Per-Use (billed per second, only while the server is running).
- Pick a package — the entry package with 2 GB RAM is plenty for vanilla worlds (details in How much RAM?).
- Pick a location (Germany/Frankfurt for Europe, USA/Salt Lake City for North America) and complete the order.
The server installs automatically and is ready in under 90 seconds.
Step 2: Configure the world
In the panel, under Configuration, you’ll find your server’s key startup values. The central decisions before the first start:
| Setting | Meaning |
|---|---|
World size (autocreate) | 1 = small, 2 = medium, 3 = large |
World name (worldname) | Name of the automatically created world |
Difficulty (difficulty) | 0 = Classic, 1 = Expert, 2 = Master, 3 = Journey |
Seed (seed) | Optional — e.g. for secret seeds |
Password (password) | Optional — keeps strangers out |
All options are explained in detail in serverconfig.txt explained.
Step 3: Start and connect
- Click Start in the panel. On first start the server generates the world — this takes a moment depending on world size.
- Launch Terraria and choose Multiplayer → Join via IP.
- Pick your character, enter the IP address from the panel and confirm the port (default 7777).
Tip
You'll find IP and port in the server overview in the panel. If the server has a password, Terraria asks for it on join — handy when only friends should get in.

Want mods?
Modded Terraria runs on tModLoader, which brings its own server. The tModLoader stable branch is still on Terraria 1.4.4 as of July 2026 — more in the admin & mods guide.
Frequently asked questions
Can mobile players join my server? Yes — since 1.4.5, PC↔Mobile crossplay works via dedicated servers. Console crossplay is announced but still awaiting certification.
Which port does Terraria use? By default port 7777 (TCP). At RespawnHost the port is already set up — just enter the details from the panel when joining.
Do I need to buy Terraria twice to run a server? No. The dedicated server is free (it lives in the game folder or as a download on terraria.org) — and at RespawnHost it comes preinstalled anyway.
