What is FiveM?
FiveM is the multiplayer modification for Grand Theft Auto V: instead of playing on Rockstar’s GTA Online, you play on your own, fully configurable servers — with your own rules, resources and game modes. Roleplay servers in particular made FiveM big. Behind FiveM is the Cfx.re team, which has officially been part of Rockstar Games / Take-Two since August 2023 — so FiveM is no longer a legal grey area, but part of the Rockstar family.

Frequently asked questions
Is FiveM legal? Yes. Cfx.re (the team behind FiveM) has officially been part of Rockstar Games / Take-Two since August 2023. Clear rules apply to server monetization, however — crypto/NFT content, real-money loot boxes and third-party intellectual property are forbidden; whitelisted perks and cosmetics are allowed. See the official FiveM and RedM Monetization Policies by Rockstar for details. Since 12 January 2026 there is also the official Cfx Marketplace.
Do I need GTA V to play FiveM? Yes — FiveM is a modification and requires your own copy of GTA V for PC. The server itself doesn’t need the game, just a free license key from portal.cfx.re.
How many players fit on a FiveM server? Up to 48 players with a free license key (OneSync Infinity). With Element Club subscriptions, 64, 128 or up to 2048 slots are possible — details in the server.cfg guide.
