Set Up Simple Voice Chat on Your Minecraft Server

Simple Voice Chat needs no port forwarding and no support ticket at RespawnHost. Your server already has extra ports that are reachable from the internet. Install the mod (or plugin), put Port 2 from the panel overview into voicechat-server.properties and restart the server. Done.

StepWhat you doWhere
1Install the mod or pluginMarketplace or the mods/ or plugins/ folder
2Start the server once, then stop itConsole
3Look up Port 2Overview → Network
4Set port= to Port 2voicechat-server.properties
5Start the server and check the logConsole

Which version do I need?

Simple Voice Chat is available for all common server types. The version has to match your server type and your Minecraft version, and every player also needs the mod in their own client.

Server typeWhat you installConfig folder
Fabric, Quilt, Forge, NeoForgeMod voicechat-<loader>-<version>.jar in mods/config/voicechat/
Paper, Spigot, Bukkit, PurpurPlugin voicechat-bukkit-<version>.jar in plugins/plugins/voicechat/

Download: Simple Voice Chat on Modrinth. Pick your loader and Minecraft version at the top. On Fabric you also need the Fabric API in the mods/ folder.

Players need the mod in their client

Without the mod in their own Minecraft, nobody can hear or talk. The easiest way for your players is a launcher such as the Modrinth App, Prism or CurseForge. The version should match the server version.

Which port do I use for voice chat?

Use Port 2 from the panel overview. Here is where to find it:

  1. Open your server in the panel.
  2. In the Overview, expand the Network section.
  3. It lists the IP address, Primary port, Port 2 and Port 3.
Port in the panelUsed byFor Simple Voice Chat?
Primary portMinecraft (TCP) and server query (UDP)No, the query already uses UDP here
Port 2RCON, TCP onlyYes, recommended. Voice chat uses UDP only
Port 3Bedrock port for GeyserMC (UDP)Only if you do not use Geyser

The default port=24454 does not work with us because that port does not belong to your server. Avoid port=-1 (voice chat on the Minecraft port) as well, because the server query already runs over UDP there.

Set up Simple Voice Chat step by step

1. Install the mod or plugin

Use the Marketplace in the panel or upload the matching .jar in the File Manager to mods/ (Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, Quilt) or plugins/ (Paper, Spigot).

2. Start the server once and stop it again

Simple Voice Chat only creates its config file on the first start. Start the server, wait until it is online, then stop it.

Only edit the config while the server is stopped

If the server is running while you edit the file, it can overwrite it with the old values on shutdown and your change is simply gone. The mod's official documentation says the same: if values keep resetting, the server was running while you edited them.

3. Enter the port

Open in the File Manager:

  • Fabric, Forge, NeoForge, Quilt: config/voicechat/voicechat-server.properties
  • Paper, Spigot, Bukkit: plugins/voicechat/voicechat-server.properties

Change the port line to your Port 2, for example:

port=25868

Leave the other values as they are. Keep bind_address and voice_host empty, then players automatically use the same address as for Minecraft.

4. Start the server and check

Start the server and look for a line like this in the console:

Voice chat server started at port 25868

If it shows your Port 2, voice chat is running. Use /voicechat test <playername> to check a specific player’s connection.

What if voice chat does not connect?

Port checkers say "closed"

Online port checkers usually test TCP. Simple Voice Chat uses UDP and only answers its own packets, so these tools often report the port as closed even when it works. Only the line in the server log and the in-game test are reliable.

Still stuck? Open a ticket with your server ID and we will look at the log directly.

Does Simple Voice Chat work with Bedrock players via Geyser?

No. Simple Voice Chat is a Java mod, Bedrock players cannot install it. Java players on the same server can still use it. If you run Geyser, Port 3 stays reserved for Bedrock and voice chat runs on Port 2. More on Geyser: GeyserMC & Floodgate.
