Build 42.20 is stable – your server runs it

Since 29 July 2026 Build 42 is the stable version, with multiplayer on the main branch: twice the map area, three new towns, animals and a server-side inventory with anti-cheat. One day later Project Zomboid hit its Steam all-time peak of 79,670 concurrent players. New servers start on 42.20 automatically – to stay on Build 41, use the legacy41 branch.

What is a Project Zomboid server?

A Project Zomboid server is a dedicated multiplayer server for the hardcore zombie survival simulation by The Indie Stone. The isometric world stays persistent 24/7 — broken windows, parked cars and your base remain in place even when nobody is online. The Java-based server uses port 16261 (UDP) by default and loads Workshop mods automatically via servertest.ini. Since 29 July 2026 Build 42.20 is the stable version, with multiplayer on the main branch: inventory and TimedActions now run server-side, which raises the RAM requirement — our entry plan therefore starts at 10 GB. To stay on Build 41, use the legacy41 branch.

Frequently Asked Questions about Project Zomboid Servers

Project Zomboid Server Hosting: Your Dedicated Server for the Apocalypse

Project Zomboid is deep, complex, and merciless — a single bite can mean the end. Together with friends, the odds of survival improve: build a fortress, loot Louisville, and fight thousands of zombies in a world that permanently saves everything. With a Project Zomboid server from RespawnHost, your world keeps running 24/7 without a host having to keep the game open.

Why rent a Project Zomboid server at RespawnHost?

Project Zomboid is a Java-based game that requires extremely high amounts of RAM, especially when driving fast across the map with vehicles (Map Streaming) or using many mods. Our servers are equipped with plenty of RAM to prevent 'Black Boxing' (map loading errors) and lags.

Mods are what makes PZ shine. Whether new cars, weapons, or map expansions like 'Raven Creek' - you simply enter the Workshop IDs and Mod IDs in servertest.ini, and the server downloads everything automatically from the Steam Workshop on startup.

Features for Survivors

  • Mod Support: Easy installation via Workshop IDs and Mod IDs
  • Sandbox Options: Customize everything - from zombie speed to loot
  • RAM Power: Enough memory for smooth map streaming
  • Soft Reset: Reset the world but keep characters and skills
  • DDoS Protection: Security against attacks
  • Backup System: Protect your progress

With our Pay-Per-Use model, you only pay when you play. Perfect for co-op rounds on the weekend.

Fairness through Pay-Per-Use

Why pay for a server that stands empty? At RespawnHost, you only pay for the time the server is running. Start it for the loot run and stop it afterwards. So you save money.

Full transparency: You see exactly what the server costs. No hidden fees. You have full control.

Tip: Use the time the server is offline to optimize your mod list or adjust configs.

How much RAM does a Project Zomboid server need?

RAM demand grows with player count and mod list — not with map size. From our hosting experience:

Tech facts: The server uses port 16261 (UDP) by default plus the automatically assigned follow-up port 16262 (UDP) — pre-configured with us, no port forwarding needed. Server settings (mods, PvP, whitelist) live in servertest.ini, world rules (zombie population, loot respawn, XP multiplier) in servertest_SandboxVars.lua. You can edit both files directly in the panel or via SFTP.

  • 10 GB RAM: 2-16 players, the entry tier for PZ — from 18.00 €/month or 0.0958 €/h
  • 14 GB RAM: larger groups with mods and vehicles — prevents lag during map streaming
  • 20 GB RAM: up to 36 players or large mod packs with map expansions
  • 24 GB RAM: community servers with high zombie population and long mod lists

Build 42 multiplayer: what is the current status?

Since December 18, 2025, multiplayer for Build 42 has been available on the unstable branch — as a stress test that The Indie Stone explicitly calls a work in progress. The developers currently recommend a maximum of around 20 players per server and advise keeping mods disabled for stable runs. The stable version remains Build 41.78.16 for now.

For your co-op server this means: Build 41 is the safe choice for modded long-term worlds. Build 42 will later bring animal husbandry, basements, and the fully reworked crafting system to multiplayer. Once Build 42 goes stable, your RespawnHost server installs the update automatically on the next restart — and with the backup system you can secure your Build 41 world beforehand.
