What is a Riftbreaker server?

A Riftbreaker server is an always-available co-op server for EXOR Studios' base-building ARPG: instead of one player's gaming PC simulating all of Galatea 37, the server does it – all four players connect as clients. The Riftbreaker gained online co-op for up to 4 players with Update 2.0 on 25 August 2025, and since December 2025 there is a standalone, free dedicated server app that runs headless with no graphics rendering. At RespawnHost you rent it pay-per-use from 0.0320 €/h or as a fixed plan from 8.00 €/month – ready to play in under 90 seconds.

Steam, Epic and GOG on one Riftbreaker server

Update 2.0 launched online co-op on Steam, Epic Games Store and GOG at the same time. Joining directly via link or IP – exactly how you connect to a rented server – lets all three PC versions play together. Consoles are left out: the PS5 and Xbox versions received Update 2.0 without online co-op, because hosting and playing on the same machine pushes console memory usage too far. So if you want to play across storefronts, you stay on PC.

Frequently asked questions about The Riftbreaker servers

The Riftbreaker server hosting: co-op on Galatea 37 without a host PC

The Riftbreaker by EXOR Studios blends base building, tower defense and a Diablo-style action RPG: as Captain Ashley S. Nowak in the Mr. Riggs mech suit you build a base on planet Galatea 37, work through a deep tech tree and defend everything against waves of creatures. Since Update 2.0 you can do all of that in co-op – and that is exactly where a dedicated server earns its keep: in peer-to-peer co-op one player simulates the entire world on their own machine, and the moment they go offline, everyone's session ends.

Why rent a The Riftbreaker server at RespawnHost?

Late-game Riftbreaker saves simulate hundreds of buildings, conveyors and towers while entire creature hordes attack. If a teammate hosts, their PC carries that load on top of rendering their own game – frame drops during every attack are all but guaranteed. EXOR name this as the main reason for their dedicated server app: with the simulation on a separate machine, all four players connect as clients and simply receive pre-computed data.

We run that on modern AMD Ryzen CPUs with strong single-core performance and NVMe SSDs – in Frankfurt for Europe and Salt Lake City (Utah) and Charlotte (North Carolina) for North America. The server app runs headless with no graphics rendering, so only CPU and RAM matter. Automatic backups protect your saves, and SFTP gives you access to saves, configs and logs at any time.

Support that knows the game

One detail trips up Riftbreaker groups again and again: the server app version and the game version must match exactly, or nobody gets in. On our servers a restart pulls the current version automatically – and if something still breaks after an update, start with our guide friends can't join, then reach our support team via ticket and Discord, usually on weekends too.

Features for Riftbreaker groups

  • Up to 4 players: the co-op maximum EXOR officially supports
  • Every co-op mode: Story Campaign, Survival and the Open Campaign from World Expansion IV
  • Steam, Epic Games Store and GOG players connect to the same server
  • No second copy of the game required – the dedicated server app is free
  • Config editor and live console in the web interface, plus RCON from inside the game
  • Automatic backups with one-click restore
  • DDoS protection: always on, no surcharge

Your entire server configuration – game mode, starting biome, difficulty, server name, password – lives in a single config.cfg that you edit right in the browser using the file manager in our panel. No SSH, no batch files, no guessing at launch parameters.

Fairness redefined: the pay-per-use principle

Riftbreaker is a session game: you meet up for a few hours, build, research, survive the next wave – and then call it a night. With our pay-per-use model you only pay while the server is actually running: a four-hour co-op session on the Scout plan costs roughly 0.13 €.

If you want the server up around the clock, a fixed plan from 8.00 €/month works out cheaper – with term discounts of up to 20% on 360 days. Prepaid credit keeps you in full control: top up, start instantly, no subscriptions, no cancellation periods.

Locations: Germany (EU), Salt Lake City, UT (US West), and Charlotte, NC (US East)

Choose between Germany (EU), Salt Lake City, UT (US West), and Charlotte, NC (US East). Compare locations with the ping test and consider where your fellow players are based.

Self-hosting vs. renting a The Riftbreaker server

There are three ways to play Galatea 37 together – and they feel very different day to day:

Peer-to-peer co-op: one player hosts from inside the game, the others join via the server browser or a link. Free, but the host carries the full simulation load on top of their own game – and when they log off, the session ends for everyone.

Your own PC running the dedicated server app: EXOR offer the server app free on Steam (app ID 4114030, around 600 MB instead of the game's 11 GB+), and it can be downloaded anonymously via SteamCMD without a Steam account. Technically the clean solution – but it needs a machine that stays on, a port forward on your router, and manual work after every patch to realign the server and game versions.

A rented server at RespawnHost: the same official server app, pre-configured, with automatic updates and backups, no port forwarding and no box humming in your living room – billed by the second on modern AMD Ryzen hardware.

Configuring a The Riftbreaker server: config.cfg, modes and RCON

By default the server app opens a small window with basic options. For datacenter operation it runs fully headless with the launch parameters cli=1 config=config.cfg and reads everything from the config file. These are the lines that matter:

RCON in The Riftbreaker works from inside the game: set server_rcon_password on the server, type server_rcon_password YourPassword in the client console, and run commands as rcon [command]. Handy for adjusting things mid-session without kicking anyone out.

Our RAM guidance: the Story Campaign for two runs comfortably on Scout with 4 GB (8.00 €/month), four players with mid-size bases are well served by Outpost with 6 GB, large survival runs belong on Rift Station with 8 GB, and endgame saves with megastructures and many active outposts want Megastructure with 12 GB (21.60 €/month). Ports are assigned automatically – IP and port are shown in the web interface, and router port forwarding is never needed.

  • set app_mode "server" – mandatory. Without it the app waits for a menu that never appears in headless mode and hangs on the loading screen
  • set campaign – the game mode: open/open for the Open Campaign, mp_story/mp_story for the Story Campaign, mp_survival/mp_survival for Survival
  • set mission – the starting map. Open Campaign: campaigns/open/headquarters_jungle, _metallic, _acid, _ice, _swamp, _caverns, _desert. Survival: survival/jungle, survival/acid, survival/desert, survival/magma, survival/ice, survival/metallic, survival/caverns, survival/swamp, survival/swamp_lakes. The Story Campaign does not need this line – it always begins in the Tropical Zone
  • set difficulty – also mandatory, and different per mode: easy / normal / hard / brutal in the Open Campaign, coop_campaign_easy through coop_campaign_brutal in the Story Campaign, coop_easy through coop_brutal in Survival
  • set server_max_players_count "4" – four is the officially supported maximum; beyond that EXOR warn that performance tanks considerably
  • set server_pause_game_when_empty "1" – pauses the simulation once the last player disconnects, so your base is not overrun while you are away
  • set server_broadcast_enabled "1" – lists the server in the in-game server browser; 0 keeps it private
  • set server_password and set server_rcon_password – join password and remote-control password
  • set mission_save "SAVE_NAME" – loads an existing save instead of generating a new world

The Riftbreaker in 2026: co-op, dedicated server and World Expansion IV

Online co-op arrived on 25 August 2025 with the free Update 2.0 "Co-Op & Endgame" – after more than a year of closed and open beta. Up to four players run the Story Campaign, Survival and the prologue mission together, with difficulty scaling dynamically to the group size. The update also added a real endgame: six megastructures that swallow enormous amounts of resources and require ongoing maintenance, 14 special encounter tiles, a randomised mission generator and up to 15 outposts per save.

On 5 March 2026 came World Expansion IV, free as well: the new Open Campaign lets you pick your starting biome freely, drops dialogue and story locks and gives you a single objective – get the Prime Rift Station running. Alongside it arrived the Cryo Fields, a permanently frozen biome with large palladium deposits and natural supercoolant sources, three new defensive towers (Icicle, Inferno and Shredder, each in three tiers) and much larger solid materials and energy storage buildings. The Open Campaign is co-op ready – so it works on your server from minute one.

EXOR released the dedicated server app itself on 11 December 2025, added a sample configuration in March 2026 and published an official setup guide in April 2026. One pitfall remains the most common source of connection failures: the server and game versions must be identical. On a RespawnHost server a restart handles that – our system checks for new versions on start and installs them.
