What is a The Isle server?

A The Isle server is a permanently running, dedicated multiplayer server for Afterthought's dinosaur survival game. On the current Evrima branch you grow from hatchling to adult – and because that progress is stored on the server, it persists when you log off. Server owners control slot count, AI density, available species and rules themselves. At RespawnHost you rent one via Pay-per-Use from 0.0712 €/h or as a fixed package from 17.09 €/month – online in under 90 seconds.

Frequently asked questions about The Isle servers

The Isle Server Hosting: an ecosystem that outlives you

The Isle isn't a game you play on the side. On the Evrima branch you start as a hatchling and have to eat, drink and find cover before you can even think about claiming territory. That slow climb only works if the server runs continuously – when your animal grows over days, the world can't vanish every time a fellow player shuts down their PC. That's exactly what a rented The Isle server is for.

Why rent a The Isle server at RespawnHost?

Evrima is a demanding server: on top of the players it simulates AI wildlife, vegetation and a growth system that runs individually for every animal. The more slots and the higher the AI density, the more memory and CPU clock the whole thing needs. That's why we use modern AMD Ryzen CPUs with high single-core performance and NVMe SSDs – in Frankfurt am Main for Europe and Salt Lake City for North America.

On top of that: on a rented server you set the rules. Whether a strict realism server with slow growth, a sandbox server for roleplay groups or a small private round for friends – slot count, available species, AI density and growth rates are in your hands. Automatic backups protect your world, and SFTP gives you access to all config files at any time.

Support that thinks along

Our support team plays the games themselves: whether an Evrima update rearranges the config, performance drops at full population or a whitelist needs setting up – reach us via ticket and Discord, usually on weekends too.

Features for island dwellers: rules, slots & 24/7 uptime

  • Official Evrima build: we run the current server branch from Afterthought
  • Free slot count: from a group of five to a community server at high population
  • Controllable AI density: the most important lever for performance and feel
  • Species selection: decide which dinosaurs are playable on your server
  • Automatic backups: world protection with 1-click restore
  • DDoS protection: permanently active, at no extra cost

Our web interface takes the configuration work off your hands: server name, password, slot count, AI density and whitelist are changed in the panel – and the real-time console shows you immediately whether the server starts cleanly.

Fairness redefined: the Pay-Per-Use principle

Private The Isle rounds run in the evening, not around the clock. With our Pay-Per-Use model you only pay while your server is actually running – the hourly rate for 6 GB is around 0.0712 €, so a five-hour evening session costs about 0.36 €.

For public community servers the fixed package from 17.09 €/month is the better fit – with up to 20 % term discount. Both run off the same prepaid credit, without a contract and without notice periods.

Locations: Frankfurt am Main & Salt Lake City

Instead of spreading ourselves thin from London to Singapore, we focus on the regions our community actually lives in: Frankfurt for Europe, Salt Lake City for North America. In a game where a missed dodge costs your animal its life, every millisecond of ping counts.

Self-hosting or renting a The Isle server?

There are two realistic ways to share an island:

Dedicated server on your own hardware: Afterthought provides the server build, but you need a machine with decent single-core performance and at least 6-8 GB of free RAM running around the clock. Add port forwarding, manual updates after every Evrima patch, and the certainty that your upload limits play quality for everyone else.

Rented server at RespawnHost: The Evrima server comes preconfigured, updates and backups run automatically, port forwarding is unnecessary – and with Pay-per-Use you only pay for actual runtime on modern AMD Ryzen hardware in a data centre.

There is no classic friends-list co-op mode in The Isle the way many survival games have it – play happens on servers. So the question isn't whether a server, but where it stands.

Setting up a The Isle server: slots, AI density & species

You manage the important settings of your server entirely through our panel:

As a RAM guideline: a quiet server with 20-30 slots runs well on 6-8 GB (Hatchling/Juvenile). For 50-100 slots plan for 8-12 GB (Sub-Adult/Adult), above that 12-16 GB and more is appropriate. Worth knowing: Evrima isn't fully optimised for very high populations – if you push slot counts well beyond 100, reduce AI density noticeably, otherwise the wildlife costs more performance than the players.

  • Slot count: freely adjustable – the practical ceiling comes from RAM, CPU and AI density
  • AI density (AIDensity): controls how much computer-driven wildlife populates the island – the single biggest performance lever
  • Playable species: you decide which dinosaurs are available on your server
  • Growth rate: determines how long the path from hatchling to adult takes
  • Whitelist & password: for private rounds or moderated roleplay communities
  • Admin tools: manage players, set species and step in when someone breaks the rules

What kind of server do you want to run?

Evrima instead of Legacy: what that means for your server

The Isle has been developed on the Evrima branch for years – a complete rework that replaced the old Legacy build. Evrima leans harder into realism: limited field of view, real growth, stamina and nutrition systems plus AI wildlife that wants to be hunted. For server owners that means more knobs to turn, but also more load.

Afterthought regularly adds new species and systems. After a major patch the server configuration can change – with us a restart is enough to install the new version. A prior backup is still advisable so your settings come back quickly if needed.

The Isle servers differ less in hardware than in house rules. Three directions are the most common:

  • Realism server: slow growth, high AI density, barely any intervention – the path to apex predator takes days and feels earned
  • Roleplay server: fixed packs, territory borders and moderated rules; here whitelist management matters more than any setting
  • Private round: a small server just for friends, password-protected and started in the evening via Pay-per-Use

For the first two variants a continuously running fixed package makes sense so members can play whenever they like. For the private round Pay-per-Use is usually far cheaper – you only pay for the evenings you actually play.
