What is Core Keeper? - The Game in Detail
Core Keeper is a top-down sandbox survival game by Pugstorm and Fireshine Games. After over two years in Early Access, the game reached version 1.0 in August 2024 and is now available for PlayStation 4/5, Xbox One/Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch. In a vast, procedurally generated cave world, you awaken as an explorer in a long-forgotten cavern full of undiscovered secrets. Your mission: Gather resources, craft tools, build bases, and face the dangerous titans guarding the mystery of the ancient Core.
The gameplay combines the best elements of survival, crafting, and action RPG genres. You start with simple tools and work your way up through different technology tiers. From a simple wooden pickaxe to the mighty Obliteration Ray - the progression is satisfying and motivating. Core Keeper is deliberately designed to appeal to both solo players and large groups. The dynamic world evolves as you play, and every session feels fresh.
13 Unique Biomes to Explore
Core Keeper's underground is divided into 13 different biomes, each with unique resources, enemies, secrets, and bosses. Exploring these biomes forms the core of the game and provides hundreds of hours of gameplay.
- The Undergrounds - The starting area around the mysterious Core where your adventure begins
- Clay Caves - Caves full of clay and early resources for your first crafting projects
- Forgotten Ruins - Remnants of an ancient civilization with hidden treasures
- Azeos' Wilderness - A green, forest-like biome underground with three bosses
- Sunken Sea - An underground ocean for fishing, swimming, and exploration
- Desert of Beginnings - A desert landscape with five bosses and endgame content
- Shimmering Frontier - A crystalline biome with blue shimmering floors and walls
- The Passage - Currently the final biome at the world's edge, made of fossils
- Meadow - A peaceful sub-biome for farming and animal husbandry
- Larva Hive - Dangerous territory full of insects and organic structures
- Mold Dungeon - Dark dungeons with fungal growth and strong enemies
- Forlorn Metropolis - Ruins of a fallen city
- Molten Quarry - Volcanic area with lava and rare ores
Each biome requires different strategies and equipment. In the Sunken Sea, you need diving gear; in the Desert of Beginnings, heat protection. This variety ensures the game stays engaging even after many hours.

11 Skills for Your Playstyle
Core Keeper features a dynamic skill system with 11 different abilities. Unlike many games, you level skills through active play - the more you perform an activity, the better you become at it.
- Mining - More efficient ore and stone extraction, better drops
- Melee - Improve melee damage and attack techniques
- Range - Increase ranged damage and precision
- Vitality - More health points and stamina
- Crafting - Create better items, use fewer materials
- Cooking - Cook more effective dishes with stronger buffs
- Fishing - Catch rare fish and improve fishing results
- Gardening - Make plants grow faster, higher yields
- Running - Move faster and use less stamina
- Magic - Enhance magical abilities and spells (Mage playstyle)
- Explosives - More efficient use of explosives (Update 1.1)
The system lets you develop your own playstyle. You can specialize as a melee fighter, ranged attacker, mage, or support - or stay flexible as an all-rounder. In groups, it makes sense for players to focus on different skills.
Extensive Crafting and Automation System
The crafting system in Core Keeper is deep and satisfying. You start with a simple workbench and unlock specialized stations throughout the game: furnaces, anvils, cooking stations, electronics workbenches, and more. The progression from primitive tools to high-tech equipment feels earned.
What sets Core Keeper apart from other survival games is the automation system. With conveyor belts, mechanical arms, wiring, and various automated production devices, you can build complex factories. Resources are automatically mined, transported, and processed. Farming setups harvest and plant on their own. For players who enjoy technical or creative approaches, Core Keeper offers endless possibilities.
- Workbenches and furnaces for basic crafting
- Anvils and forges for weapons and armor
- Cooking stations for buffs and healing
- Electronics workbenches for automation
- Conveyor belts and robotic arms for transport
- Wiring systems for complex machines
- Automated farming setups
- Lighting and decoration for your base
Farming, Animals, and Relaxed Gameplay
Core Keeper isn't just action - the game offers relaxing activities too. The farming system lets you plant seeds and grow plants. Use your harvest to cook dishes with powerful buffs. With the Paws & Claws update came a complete animal husbandry system: Keep and breed livestock, gather resources, and hatch cute pets as loyal companions.
The Meadow sub-biome is the perfect place for your farm. Here you'll find peaceful areas for growing crops without enemy disturbance. The combination of intense boss fights and relaxed farming gives Core Keeper a unique balance.
Multiplayer and Dedicated Servers
Core Keeper was designed from the start for co-op gameplay. The game supports drop-in/drop-out multiplayer - friends can join or leave anytime without the host needing to restart. With a dedicated server at RespawnHost, you're completely independent: Your world continues even when the original host is offline.
Unlike the standard 8-player limit in local play, dedicated servers support far more players. Through ServerConfig.json, you can increase the limit to 100 players or more - depending on your hardware. Thanks to cross-play between Steam, Epic, GoG, Microsoft Store, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch, friends from all platforms can play together.
Regular Updates and New Content
Pugstorm and Fireshine Games actively maintain Core Keeper with regular updates. Since Early Access began in 2022, the game has gained massive amounts of content. Major updates include new biomes, bosses, skills, items, and quality-of-life improvements.
- Version 1.0 (August 2024): Full release with The Passage biome, new bosses, Mage/Warlock playstyles, PvP options, and waypoint teleportation

This continuous development means new content always awaits you. Your Core Keeper server stays up to date automatically through automatic updates.
Vehicles, Instruments, and More
Core Keeper offers far more than just mining and fighting. You can build vehicles to travel faster through the world. Railway systems transport you and resources over long distances. Playable instruments of various kinds bring music to your caves - complete with sheet music to play along.
NPCs can be recruited to help with trading and quests. Seasonal events bring time-limited content and rewards. An extensive achievement system rewards explorers for their progress. Decoration and painting let you customize your base individually.
