Romestead developers point players with disconnects to the 0.26.3 beta branch
Beartwigs explains why multiplayer sessions drop and what to try, from the beta branch to connecting by IP.

Romestead developer Beartwigs published a Steam post on 15 October addressing the connection issues some players keep running into. The first recommendation: switch to the beta branch “0.26.3-beta” and report back if the problems continue. Saves are compatible between the beta branch and the main version, the studio wrote, so there is no risk in trying it.
When you join another player through Steam, the connection runs over the Steam Datagram Relay (SDR) network. According to Beartwigs, that usually makes it faster and more stable and keeps your IP hidden. Disconnects happen when network messages between host and client don’t arrive in time, and the reasons for that are often out of the studio’s hands.
“We do not host any servers,” the post reads. In multiplayer, the host is whoever runs the server, so in a group the player with the strongest internet connection should host.
Beartwigs is working on three things:
- Keeping players connected even when the connection is struggling.
- Reconnecting you where you dropped out rather than at your respawn point.
- Further reducing the network traffic the game needs.
For anyone who would rather stay off the beta, the post collects workarounds from the community. Players who hosted through Host LAN or the Romestead Dedicated Server tool and then connected by IP report that the disconnects went away. That may require forwarding the server’s port, which defaults to 8050.
Renting a server from a provider can also help, since it sidesteps Steam. Some players fixed their drops with a VPN such as Cloudflare WARP, which can improve routing.
If your Romestead server already runs as a dedicated server, those reports suggest trying a direct connection by IP and port before going through Steam.
On the roadmap side, work on the next major update covers new enemies and attacks, environments, dungeons and the first boss, with development footage promised soon. Beartwigs is also taking questions as replies to the Steam post and plans to answer the most common ones in a future post or video.
