Mojang Studios announced a fourth Minecraft dimension at Minecraft Live on 26 September. It is called The Sift, and it is coming to Java and Bedrock Edition next year. It will be the first new dimension in over 14 years, joining the Overworld, the Nether and the End.
Details are thin for now. Mojang’s recap of the show describes The Sift as vibrant and “teeming with souls”, and names two of its areas, the Meadow and the Carapace. The broadcast gave a short look at the dimension running in Minecraft, along with one of the mobs that lives there. How you get in, which blocks it adds and when exactly in 2027 it arrives were not part of the show.
The Sift turns up in Minecraft Dungeons II first. Mojang gave the spin-off a 29 September launch date. Its world is now interconnected rather than split into levels, and rifts keep opening across it. Step into one and it drops you into The Sift. Minecraft Java and Bedrock Edition follow “next year”, the recap says.
Mojang also gave a first look at the next game drop, and it takes you underground. It adds ice caves as a new cave biome, next to dripstone, lush and sulfur caves. They are filled with ice and calcite, with icicles growing from the ceiling and softly glowing ice crystals on the floor. A frozen zombie variant, still unnamed, deals damage plus a freezing effect when it hits you, and some of them throw ice balls. Mojang has not given that drop a date yet.
If you run a server, there is nothing to prepare for The Sift so far. Mojang has said nothing about world generation, existing worlds or server requirements for it. The current Java release is 26.3 from 15 September, the Wilderness Bound drop with the Dappled Forest biome. Setting up a fresh server on it? The patch notes say white-list in server.properties now defaults to true. Players have to be added to the whitelist first unless you switch it off. Some log lines that server software used to watch for are also gone, and Mojang points to the Minecraft Server Management Protocol instead.
Until The Sift reaches Java and Bedrock, Dungeons II is the only place to see it. For existing worlds the open question is whether ice caves and The Sift will need freshly generated chunks. Mojang hasn’t said.
